The stone carvings in 'Square Circle Line' share a narrative link. The first stone carving is a solid marble block measuring 25 x 25 x 3.625 inches. The second stone carving is a chain of interconnected circles carved from a marble block measuring 25 x 25 x 3.625 inches. A 3D digital model of the carving design is available on Sketchfab. This carving design of forty-two circles will allow the stone to become a flexible, 5-foot-8-inch stone line when one circle is removed.
The final sculpture will include the two stone objects and a digital photograph, creating a composition of three elements. The composition will consist of one solid square block resting on the ground (where we often see a pedestal), a line of interconnected circles hanging from the ceiling above, and a digital photograph on the wall beside the stone objects capturing the completed stone chain in it’s initial carving format—a circle of smaller circles. My intent for this digital photograph is that it lands in an “uncanny” space between archival object documentation and digital rendering. The photograph will present “fact” and “fiction” simultaneously while capturing the transitional phase between a solid stone block and a flexible stone line.
The diagram presents the intended layout of the sculpture's three elements.
The Square is a 25 x 25 x 3.625-inch marble block. The marble block weighs approximately 100 pounds and will rest on the ground.
The Circle is a color print of a digital photograph of the marble carving on a white background. The circles in the photo are the same size as the marble circles, so the digital print is 25 by 25 inches.
The Line is forty-one interconnected marble circles, totaling five feet eight inches in length. Each circle has a diameter of approximately three inches and a thickness of nine-sixteenths. The marble line weighs approximately 7.5 pounds and will hang from the ceiling.
